New Jersey Senate Recognizes Peace Islands Institute
On December 20, 2012, the New Jersey Senate recognized Peace Islands Institute, together with the Turkish Cultural Center of New Jersey, the business association TABID NJ and Pioneer Academy of Science, for their efforts to contribute to peace and dialogue, education, cultural life and business in New Jersey. The recognition came weeks after the General Assembly honored the same organizations with an Assembly resolution.
Senators from both parties spoke about the Institute’s work. Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg recalled traveling to Turkey with Peace Islands Institute and thanked the organizations for widening educational opportunities for young people. Senator Anthony R. Bucco spoke about joining the Institute’s meat distributions to soup kitchens and food pantries, and Senator M. Teresa Ruiz praised the Institute’s Art & Essay Contest for students. Senator Diane Allen said the Institute always reaches out to help people understand its work, and Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr. called Peace Islands Institute “an extraordinary partner and extraordinary leader,” according to Turk of America’s report of the session.
