Youth Peace Network Begins Its 2026–2027 Year with “Becoming a Peace Agent”

October 6, 2026

On October 6, 2026, Peace Islands Institute launched its 2026–2027 Youth Peace Network (YPN) program with its first training, “Becoming a Peace Agent.”

High school students gathered to enjoy food, connect with one another, and explore the importance of dialogue, empathy, and building meaningful relationships across different backgrounds. The session emphasized what it means to be a peace agent and how young people can foster understanding and positive change in their communities. One simple idea from the evening stayed with the room: “Baklava is dialogue” — bring what is yours, offer it without a speech, and let curiosity do its work.

Guest speaker Mina Turkyolu, an alumna of YPN, shared her personal journey through college and beyond, inspiring students to embrace new experiences, build connections, and recognize their potential as future leaders. Hearing from someone who once sat in the same seats gave this year’s participants a clear picture of where the skills they practice in YPN can lead.

Why the Youth Peace Network matters

Today’s high school students grow up alongside classmates and neighbors of many cultures, faiths, and points of view. The Youth Peace Network gives them a place to practice the skills that turn that diversity into friendship: listening with curiosity, speaking with respect, working through disagreement, and serving others. Along the way, students build confidence, gain leadership experience, and form friendships with peers they might never otherwise have met. These are the habits that make schools and communities stronger, and the earlier young people learn them, the further they carry them.

The year ahead

This gathering marked the beginning of a year of trainings and community engagement events designed to empower students to become compassionate leaders and active peacebuilders. Throughout the 2026–2027 program year, participants will take part in hands-on trainings on communication, leadership, and intercultural understanding, alongside community events such as interfaith gatherings and service projects. The year concludes with a graduation ceremony recognizing the students who complete the program.
